Jason by Laurell K Hamilton

I've been a reader of Laurell K Hamilton since middle school when I first found Guilty Pleasures at a garage sale. I've since read every book she's written loyally.  However, Jason, I am not a fan of.  I like the character, but the book....

I first was intrigued by the main character Anita Blake.  A vampire hunter in a world where vampires are legal citizens and have rights, so how can these conflicting ideas exist?  It would be murder to hunt a vampire right?  I was pulled in by the plot and complexity of Anita, and found I related to her.  The insecurity, the false toughness, the stubbornness beyond belief.

The plot line was entertaining, the tension, both sexual and otherwise was entrancing.

But after about the 7th book in the series, everything started becoming too sexual for me.  Her series about Meredith, is almost all sexual in nature, and frankly it is not my cup of tea, though I still read it for the plotline and magic, fiction has always intrigued me.

But this latest, Jason, is all sex.  Basically the entire book is sex, referencing sex, talking about sex, inuendos and more sex.  I want more to my books that I read than that.  I want more about the characters, and something should happen in them other than the main character getting laid.  My attention simply will not be held by just sex for more than a page or two.

I'm sorry Laurell, but for Jason I'm not a big fan.

Divergent Series

I recently read the Divergent series by Veronica Roth.  Overall, they are a great set of stories for young adults.  In my opinion best for ages 13-17.  If you are 18 and up reading them, then I would hope they are strictly for entertainment purposes, not to learn.  However, the thing that I love about young adult books and even children's books are the lessons that I don't think the authors even catch that they include.

In the Divergent trilogy the main character Beatrice "Tris" Prior lives in a futuristic world where society is broken up into "factions" based upon personality traits.  Courageous are Dauntless. Selfless are Abnegation. And so on and so forth.  I doubt many of the kids who read these books took the time to look up the definitions of any of the faction's names, but still the attempt to educate our youth on words bigger than lol I applaud.

Tris is faced with a difficult decision when the test that determines which faction she should belong to gives unconcrete results.  This begins a world of mystery of exactly what it is to be Divergent (have more than one test result), what this means to her society, and the dangers and trials that face those who are Divergent.

I don't like spoilers, so I try not to reveal too much in any of my reviews.  Overall, it's a quick read, I finished the trilogy in about two hours, but I am a very swift reader.  It flies by quickly and is moderately entertaining.

I give this series 3 out of 5 stars.
